  • Ask students to clap rhythms notated on flash cards (ideally flash cards will be in 44 or 34 but you do not need to state this explicitly). You can choose rhythms that will be used in the piece they are learning. Ask students to point out where the rhythm(s) occur in their piece.
  • Set out 2 flash cards and clap/play one of them. Ask the student to identify which one you have performed.
  • Create a rhythm piece by either asking the student to write out a rhythm or getting them to pick flash cards. You could also create a rhythm duet for an extra challenge.
  • Snap. Create your own snap cards or use duplicate sets of rhythm flash cards. Either play for a direct snap (e.g. semibreve to semibreve is a snap) or a value snap (e.g. 4 beats to 4 beats is a snap regardless of note values used). This helps students to learn the value of individual notes and also learn what patterns of notes make up 1/2/3/4 beats etc.
