Students should develop their hand co-ordination at the piano during Unit F7. The pieces they play should require increasing independence of hands. They should also gain experience of playing pieces that include 3 voices (at least in some parts).
- Find some simple 3 part pieces such as easy fugues, to introduce the concept to students.
- Get students to play each part separately, when they are learning a piece with multiple voices. This will help them find the direction of each voice.
- Can the student sing one part, maybe while playing another.
- Ask the student to experiment with thumb and finger weight and energy, in order to bring out different voices within the texture. Encourage them to practice this at home, and on any other pianos they have access to.
