Unit H03 – Tempo

Students should continue to add to their personal glossary of musical terms, the following are suggestions that may be appropriate at this stage:

  • alla misura
  • doppio movimento
  • incalzando
  • langsam
  • lebhaft
  • ruhig
  • schnell
  • senza misura

As in previous stages, students should continue developing their skills at independent interpretation of tempo.


Activities

  • Encourage students to use a metronome in their practice and in the lesson, to help develop a secure understanding of different tempos.
  • Use a wide repertoire of music with the student, so they experience playing in as many different tempos as possible.
  • Remind students to clap a pulse to set a tempo when they practice. By now they may be able to do this in their head.
