Unit H10 – Tonality

The circle of fifths can be introduced at Stage H, if it has not already been encountered. Students should learn about any remaining key signatures they have not yet come across, and be able to confidently use various techniques to identify the key of a piece.

To expand on this topic, consider teaching your students about different tonalities rather than just the western major/minor tonality included in this curriculum.

Activities

  • At this stage you should be offering your students wide range of repertoire as standard. Providing students with a varied experience is essential for their development and growth.
  • Encourage students to identify the key signature as soon as they encounter a new piece, and be alert for any key signature changes. Many students will do this anyway, but some may need reminding.
