Unit H14 – Pedalling

Students learn about the una corda pedal (soft pedal) in this unit. In addition, they should continue to work towards an independent interpretation of use of all pedals, as well as developing their control.

Activities

  • Encourage the student to experiment with the pedals at the piano both in the lesson, or at home. Use chords, scales, or phrases of music that the student has already mastered so they can easily listen to the change in sound.
  • Discuss the different sounds with the student
  • Look inside the piano, if possible, to see what is going on inside when the una corda pedal is depressed.
  • Explore repertoire that uses the una corda pedal, and symbols. Discuss how this affects the character or mood of the piece/section.
